Laying the tracks for the future: Fyfe’s expertise in rail surveying and shutdown operations

Railway surveying keeps the nation’s rail infrastructure in good shape. It also means the efficient and precise construction and expansion of essential rail networks.

As Australia’s transport infrastructure continues to expand, the demands on its transportation and freight systems are increasing. Reliable rail networks have never been more important, and rail surveys form the foundation of these networks.

Fyfe’s railway specialists bring decades of experience in rail survey and shutdown operations, working across critical minerals, logistics, and transport sectors. Equipped with the latest tools and technologies, our team delivers precise, high-value solutions even in the most remote and challenging environments.

Rail survey has evolved significantly, incorporating advanced technologies such as total stations, GPS, LiDAR and drone surveys. These tools mean our surveyors can gather data accurately and quickly, allowing for precise planning while reducing the risk of costly errors during construction or maintenance.

Our work in rail

We used these tools when we supported the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) on its Narromine to Narrabri (N2N) project, meticulously investigating the status and location of 233 reference marks with centimetre-level accuracy.

Australia’s vast distances and remote locations can make traditional surveying methods impractical. As a CASA-certified operator, we employ remotely piloted aircraft (drones) to collect data on railway assets in hard-to-access areas.

By creating 3D terrain models for our clients, we can identify potential obstacles or hazards along the proposed route. These models mean rail designs can avoid steep gradients, sharp curves, and other features compromising safety or efficiency.

While modern technology has dramatically improved the railway surveying process, challenges remain, including the need to protect sensitive ecosystems. Fyfe’s environmental team often works alongside our rail survey team to assess the impact.

Past projects have seen us investigating the contaminants present in hardwood rail sleepers between Broken Hill and Parkes to propose recycle options for ARTC and handling detailed flora and fauna surveys to support upgrades to Melbourne’s suburban rail lines. Returning to the N2N project, we also developed surface and groundwater monitoring strategies and soil contamination investigation strategies to support ARTC and meet legislative requirements.

Outside the public sector, we provide clients with energy and minerals rail services. In the past we’ve completed field surveys of existing rail lines at a busy Rio Tinto load-out and aerial and group surveys to support the completion of a private rail line in Mount Pleasant, including drone surveys for progress checks and volume calculations.
