In 2024, Fyfe civil and structural engineers played a pivotal role in the transformation of the old Happy Valley Shopping Centre in Adelaide
Overview
Previously known as Happy Valley Shopping Centre, Valley Central has been reimagined as a vibrant, community-focused hub offering retail, health and lifestyle services.
With over 40 years of history in the area, the centre, located near the Happy Valley reservoir in Adelaide, has been transformed into a modern, convenient destination that meets the evolving needs of the local community.
Fyfe was engaged by Collaborate Project Management (CPM), on behalf of the principal client, Salandra Group, to provide civil and structural engineering services.
Fyfe’s role and responsibilities
Fyfe was initially appointed to complete a structural condition assessment at the pre-construction stage, forming the foundation for all subsequent remedial and upgrade works.
Our involvement in the significant upgrade project was then expanded, with Fyfe civil and structural engineers working across all project stages, from concept design through to construction.
Some of our specific responsibilities included:
- The design of new southern rear entry canopy
- An upgrade of the feature canopy at the northern entry
- A structural extension on the north-eastern side for a new medical centre tenancy
- Structural modifications to the trusses to increase ceiling heights
- Integrating remediations as needed to incorporate our initial structural condition assessment.
The transformation of Valley Central breathed new life into a well-known local centre, making it better suited to the needs of the community. With its impressive new facade and a fresh look throughout, the centre is now a more useful and appealing destination.
Fyfe was pleased to support this project by ensuring that the redevelopment was built on solid engineering foundations, from early assessments through to construction support, and by contributing to a space that locals can enjoy for years to come.
