We are pleased to announce our continued partnership with Santos on the company’s joint venture Bayu-Undan Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project offshore Darwin.
Carbon capture and storage offers a proven solution to significantly reduce carbon emissions from industrial processes and power generation. It plays a vital role in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Bayu-Undan CCS project is part of Santos’ three-hub CCS strategy that includes the Moomba CCS project, now 75 per cent complete and on track to store up to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 per year commencing in 2024. Fyfe has also provided engineering and survey services to the Moomba CCS project.
The Bayu-Undan CCS project targets the capture of up to 10 Mtpa of CO2– initially from the Darwin LNG facility (DLNG), with future expansion to proximal third-party emitters. Captured CO2 will be transported to, and stored in, the offshore Bayu-Undan reservoir (in Timor Leste waters).
Fyfe’s work on Phase 1 of the project was characterised by an agile approach, allowing for flexibility during the concept design phase. This stage also saw the commencement of procurement services for long lead items. The Fyfe team, with resources across Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, and Brisbane, provided technical and procurement services that received positive feedback from the client. Santos’ satisfaction with Phase 1 highlights the effectiveness of our team’s efforts and set a positive precedent for Phase 2.
Fyfe’s role and responsibilities
For Phase 2 of the project, the Fyfe team is:
- Conducting on-site surveys and laser scans of the tie-ins and structural works required
- Providing procurement services, including technical bid evaluations
- Providing process, structural, pipeline, and design engineering services, as well as instrumentation and control assistance.
With resources and expertise from our Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, and Brisbane offices, Fyfe is well-positioned to support CCS projects around Australia.
