Survey works: Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass

The Northern Territory and Australian Governments are making significant improvements to the Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road intersection.

Around 20,000 vehicles use Tiger Brennan Drive daily. In the past, the intersection with Berrimah Road has been the site of numerous crashes.

By separating the traffic flows, the construction of a new overpass will ensure reduced peak-hour traffic delays, shorter travel times, and improved freight transport to the busy East Arm Wharf.

The project is now in its second phase with completion planned for 2024.

Fyfe’s role in phase 2

Fyfe is providing ground and aerial survey services to the lead contractor, Sitzler. Our work is helping Sitzler carry out the construction works with full insight into the local environment and existing services.

As a CASA certified operator, our aerial survey team holds the permits needed to fly drones in close proximity to Darwin Airport.

In addition to our ground survey work, we fly the site bi-weekly and deliver data via our website ‘Propeller,’ which is used by our client and the Northern Territory Government to monitor:

  • Current works
  • Safety
  • Material volumes each week.

Fyfe data, provided via Propeller, is also helping the government communicate the project’s progress to the public.

Currently, Fyfe has five full time surveyors on site in addition to GIS specialists and support team members.

A complex construction project such as the Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass presents a number of challenges that require an experienced local team. These include:

  • controlling the machine guidance systems
  • inclement weather conditions
  • live traffic on the intersection
  • adjustments to design works as the project progresses.
Our role in phase 1 and previous local experience

Our previous experience working on large-scale infrastructure projects in the Northern Territory (including phase 1 of this overpass project), local offices in Berrimah, and CASA certified UAV pilots means we’re uniquely placed to add value.

It’s not our first project in this area either, we have previously worked on projects along the Tiger Brennan Drive alignment, including bridge works at the Palmerston Overpass and Hidden Valley Road.
